Discussion:
Tekram DC-390 SCSI and Windows Vista/Windows7
(too old to reply)

Hello group ;-)

i just got an Intel Atom based Mini-PC running on Windows7. Since I have
an old Epson SCSI flatbaed scanner which should be used on this pc I had
the problem to find a PCI SCSI Card which fits into the only low profile
slot the new machine offers.

Adaptec 2930LP costs about 120 Euros at ebay, so I decided to buy an old
Tekram DC-390. Now I have the problem that this device is not supported
by Windows Vista or Windows7 built in drivers database. I read at
tekram.com.tw that there was an drive for Windws XP and just wanted to
test whether I can get it workling on Windows7, but even the download
link doesn't work.

So I'm asking whether anybody has a driver for the AMD based Tekram
DC-390 working on Windows XP or Vista. I would be very pleased for any hint.

I won't spend much money for special Vista-supported low profile
SCSI-Adaptor, the other idea would be to get an USB based Scanner from
the same model and use my Document Feeder on the USB-device.

It's a pity, the old Epson Perfection 1200S is working fine and produces
better scans than all the consumer scanners that are available now.

I have a DC-390 and it's not
even close to being "low-
profile," but drivers should
be available via Tekram's
website -- mine has an LSI
chip and is supported by all
versions of Windoze from
Win2K forward. I didn't know
they had an AMD-based version
of that card, but I do know
that Windoze does support at
least one older AMD SCSI chip
-- the one in the old QLogic
"Fast SCSI" 50-pin cards.

In your spot, I'd probably
just ditch the scanner and
get a modern USB model -- I
still use my HP ScanJet 4P,
but that's only because my
box already had an available
SCSI port.

I tried every driver I could get and none was working with Windows7.
i admit that the DC390 is not real low profile, but after little
modification of the slot bracket it fits into the slot.

Thst's the problem. I do not have the bare scanner only, but the
automatic document feeder. The Epson Perfection 1200s itself could be
changed by the USB version from ebay. But these models are typicaly
about 10 years old, so what can I expect to get from ebay?

Luckily I found an even better solution. After disassembling my old
server hardware, to which the scanner was orifginally detected, I pulled
the original Epson OEM SCSI-card. It is an Adaptec AVA 2930. I removed
the slot bracket and it works fine under Windows7 with Adaptec's drivers
from the AHA 2940.

The mechanical modifications to get the adapter into the barebone case
had do be done on the bracket and cutting off an edge from the
sub-d25-plug so it now has only one screw left for fixing the plug.
To me it's okay. The scanner works fine with Windows7.

I can't speak for Vista or 7, but I found that Epson does not support the
EP 1200S on XP x64.

Furthermore, parallel SCSI hardware seems to be nearing the end of support, so
you will have to make a decision whether to bunker down with legacy technology
which is good enough in your circumstance, or pay to keep up with the Joneses.

The Atom based machine runs on 32 bit Windows 7 since it supports only
one DIMM with a maximum of 2 GB.

The latest twain driver runs fine. I only set the setup routine to
WindowsXP-compatibility mode.

I doubt drivers were produced for anything after Windows 2000.

Check the HW Compatibility List and see if Symbios 53c810 chip-based
SCSI adapters are supported. This was used in several cheap, popular
and reliable PCI SCSI adapters. One example is the Tekram DC-310.

I guess I was a little blue-eyed when I expected a SCSI-card from 1996
working with an operating system from 2009 :-)

Problem is solved. I noticed that the original interface card was a
crippeld Adaptec 2930. I mananged to fit it into the low profile slot
and it works fine with Adaptecs AHA2940 drivers.

I have several Adaptec 2940 models (fast SCS, Ultra SCSI) in stock but
all of these card have too much heigth to get them into the barebone case.

A little. :o) The AMD PCscsi chip is an oldie but goodie.

The reason I suggested a 53c810 based chip, but forgot to mention, is
that it came fitted to many low-profile boards. I've got a box full of
them. And they Just Worked, hence my thinking there would be a Win7
driver.
